The company that developed into Snow24 Ltd was established in 1991 by ski writer Patrick Thorne who at that time had been working for ski magazines in London and authoring books on skiing for companies like Berlitz and Harper Collins for six years.
He was bored with writing about the same destinations over and over and with the rise of personal computing he began to search (by phone and letter – no internet) for ski areas around the world outside the 100 or so major destinations everyone knew at the time.
Initially locating around 3,000 centres by 1995 the company received it's first orders for a directory of resorts from the leading lift manufacturer Doppelmayr and then won an eight year contract from Microsoft to supply content on around 1,000 ski areas in the Alps for Microsoft's 'Autoroute Express' (then) CD ROM mapping software.
This secured Snow24's future and allowed for further research and development leaving the company well placed for the rise of the internet era in the late 1990s. The company was formally established with its current name following the arrival of new investors in 2000.
Over the years Snow24 has built up the world's most comprehensive database of ski resort data now extending to 6,000 ski areas and also built up an extensive image library and a live news feed as detailed in our home page.
The company is based in the Highlands of Northern Scotland, between the country's five ski areas.
